Fall for Athens: A Photo Essay
By Marlee Middlebrooks
There are certain landmarks around town that are home to the Athens community, and though it is not a permanent landmark, the bright, orange pumpkins that make their way onto the front lawn of the Milledge Avenue Baptist Church each year have certainly become a landmark in the fall for townspeople. Every year, for 11 years, this church creates its very own pumpkin patch. All proceeds from the sale of the pumpkins go to support areas of the church’s ministries such as: youth and children’s camp and retreat scholarships, choral music scholarships and building support and usage costs for Alcoholics Anonymous, Boy Scouts of America, Athens Tech/ESL classes, Habitat for Humanity and Interfaith Hospitality Network of Athens. The following photos depict a night at the pumpkin patch.
Now open. The Milledge Avenue Baptist Church opens its lawn to Athens’ families and colleges students during the month of October to come pick out a pumpkin…or two…or three.
Study break. It’s not uncommon to find friends enjoying time with one another at the pumpkin patch in the afternoons especially when school in is full swing.
Say cheese. The pumpkin patch attracts large groups of friends, too. Who says you can’t bring the entire gang to help you pick the perfect pumpkin?
The whole family. You won’t just find big, round orange pumpkins here. You’ll find all different types of plants in this family to complete your fall decorations.
A resting spot. When you need a break from searching for the perfect soon to be jack-o-lantern, just pop a squat so your mom can snap a precious photo for her scrapbook.
Leaps and bounds. The pumpkin patch is a popular place to bring your dogs, also. Lila got her exercise while her owners searched for a pumpkin.
Date night. Nothing says romantic quite like a trip to the pumpkin patch with your significant other, and you’re sure to leave with a pumpkin and a cute picture for your Instagram feed.
Surprise element. Some pumpkins are good for stacking, but then, some pumpkins are a bit wobbly and fall. Surprise.
The perfect measurement. The pumpkins all range in price depending on the size. The bigger the pumpkin, the more expensive it is.
Full house. With so many great options to choose from, it’s hard not to find a pumpkin here. There is a pumpkin for everyone at the Milledge Avenue Baptist pumpkin patch.
